Elder Futhark Runes
Runes were said to had come from the roots or Yggdrasil, the tree of, from the well of urd. Runes were more than just a regular alphabet system each rune had an in-depth meaning behind each one bringing supernatural powers and energies. Odin sacrificed himself by hanging himself on Yggdrasil for 9 days and 9 nights and then lastly impaling himself with gunginir(Odin’s spear). He did all of this for one reason, to learn the meanings behind the runes, bringing him wisdom and power. One learning and understanding these runes may bring him/hermore awareness or growth as an individual.
These energies were used by the Vikings for everyday life scenarios such as hunting, farming, and even to cure sickness. There is a total of 24 runes in the runic futharks and each has a special meaning or supernatural energy. Shown in the photo are the basic meanings behind the runes, and the corresponding letter in the English alphabet. Most runes have been found on runestones in Norway and Sweden, which are large rocks with runes carved into them telling a story of the deceased. Runestones were large rocks/boulders that had runes etched into them and were placed near graves during the Viking era between 900-1100 AD. There are around 50 found runestones today and some even date back to the fourth century in Norway and Sweden.
Runes were usually carved into wood, bone, and stone. They did carve these out and were read but they did not use these runes as we do with our writing systems today. These symbols were used for energies to be able to connect with the supernatural world or get some type of energy or power from it. This is the reason you see a lot of graves stones with runes carved into them to maybe be a protection symbol for the deceased or even to show that he or she was a great warrior and now fights, drinks, and sleeps in Valhalla. Most were able to read runes in the Vikings age, however evidence shows that they believed the fullunderstanding of the runes was an objective only fit for a god. You may already have noticed these symbols had an influence in our English alphabet such as F, O, T, M, and S as many things from the Vikings age has influenced us in our lives today.
