Aeglishjalmr or most known as Helm Of Awe or Helm of Terror, has been seen as one of the most ominous and powerful symbols during the Viking age. This symbol was found with a collection of Icelandic Folktales and spells during the 19th century and It was used by many warriors during war to strike fear into their enemies. It would be painted/tattooed between a warriors brows allowing all that stood in their way to see and bring a sense of fear into any that stood in their way. When the Aeglishjamr was found, by Jon Arnason, it was written with a spell that said;

“Make a helm of awe in lead, press the lead sign between the eyebrows, and speak the formula:

Ægishjálm er ég ber
milli brúna mér!

I bear the helm of awe
between my brows!

Thus a man could meet his enemies and be sure of victory.”

The aeglishjalmr is also mentioned in the Poetic Edda, when the dragon Fafnir possessed the power of invincibility that originated from the Helm of Awe. The poetic Edda referred to the Helm of Awe as a helmet of horror, giving the bearer of the helmet or symbol ultimate protection over all. This was not the only power it was said to possess, it is also said that this symbol would bring spiritual and mental strength to conquer even ones self-doubt’s and fears and even protection over illness and injuries sustained during the Vikings age.

The symbol was designed with the Algiz rune (ᛉ) which was a symbol of protection, which was used to surround a single point with eight algiz runes . The word Aeglishjamlr consists of two root words “aegis” meaning shield and “hjalmr” meaning helm making the word itself mean the helm of protection. This symbol would bring a feeling of power and protection to anyone who bear during war allowing them to fight like wild beasts knowing that they had protection of the gods.

The Aeglishjalmr is still used today by many pagans to bring protection over ones self, family, health and still to be protected from all enemies. It is seen as one of the most powerful Viking symbols nowadays and during the Vikings age. This is a great symbol to get tattooed or carved to bring protections in every aspect of life today. Stay safe and protected during these difficult times by bearing this symbol in one way or another!
